Minister of Health Dr Joe Phaahla launched the “vaccine passport” official portal on Friday, 8 October. Fully vaccinated residents are now able to download a digital version of their COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card after providing the required information.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD DIGITAL VACCINE CERTIFICATE

The Department of Health said only fully vaccinated people could retrieve their COVID-19 Vaccine Digital Certificate via the portal.

The digital certificate contains a QR Code that is not meant to be shown to the general public. When then the time comes, entities that need to verify whether an individual has been fully vaccinated will use a “Vaccine Certificate System inbuilt QR scanner.” The Department said this will be available imminently.

To receive the COVID-19 Vaccine Digital Certificate, users of the portal need to provide the type of identity number they possess – RSA Identity number, RSA Passport number or an Asylum Seeker or Refugee Number.

Once the form of identity has been selected and filled, users will be required to provide their name and surname, along with any vaccination code they have received as a form of proof of vaccination – the codes received via SMS after a jab. People who received the Pfizer jab should have two codes – either is fine – and people who received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine would have one.

If you input the details correctly and the Vaccine Certificate System confirms that you have been vaccinated you will be prompted to confirm the cellphone number you used when you registered on the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS).

Then, a one-time password (OTP) will be sent to the number registered on the EVDS via SMS. Enter the OTP and you should have access to your COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate, which can be downloaded as a PDF.

The bottom of the digital certificate contains a note that says the card will be updated soon with added security measures. This is expected to take place by the end of October and you will have to download the new version. The Department of Health will announce the updated card when the time comes.

If you experience difficulty while attempting to access your COVID-19 Vaccine Digital Certificate call the Department of Health at 0800-029-999 or send an email to evdsqueries@health.gov.za. The Department said that if you have lost the SMS that contains the vaccination code required to access the certificate, you can call the above number and the code will be resent to you via SMS.
