Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has reignited a war of words with the town of Orania, after saying that the whites-only enclave ‘will go’ in the not-too-distant future. The prominent politician reacted to the FF Plus’ manifesto launch this weekend, after the right-wing party called for an end to affirmative action.

PANYAZA LESUFI ‘WANTS ORANIA GONE’

The FF Plus have been amongst the most outspoken of all critics against the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) programme, and it has heightened tensions with an old enemy. Both the party and Lesufi have previously clashed on matters relating to school names, the Afrikaans language, and of course… self-determination.

Lesufi is adamant that affirmative action will be a part of ANC policy ‘until sins have been eradicated’, referring to the legacies of colonialism and apartheid. He certainly managed to fit a lot into a three-line Tweet…

LESUFI VS ORANIA ENTERNS ROUND TWO

This isn’t the first time Panyaza Lesufi has taken a swipe at Orania, either. Speaking during a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of struggle icon Harry Gwala in 2020, the MEC stated the following:

“We understand why Orania was established. But it must now be liberated. It has lived its time now. You cannot have an institution that is established on the colour of your skin or the language you speak.” | Panyaza Lesufi

A TALE OF TWO SELF-DETERMINATIONS

Orania is now 27 years old, but its presence has been a constant source of debate. In fact, its right to exist has been brought back into the spotlight during this election campaign – thanks to the Cape Independence movement. A growing number of people in the Western Cape now want to break away from SA, essentially following Orania’s lead.

However, the path to secession is a long and complicated process – and it is not one supported by Mr Lesufi.
