Soweto residents embarrasses Maponya Mall looters

The Soweto community did the country proud on Tuesday night, after locals banded together to prevent looters from ransacking the Maponya Mall.

Finding anything remotely positive from the news cycle of the past 72 hours has been a task akin to locating a needle in a haystack. However, events at Maponya Mall in Soweto may just be the ray of light we can all bask in.

MAPONYA MALL WILL NOT FALL…

The last mall standing in Soweto was protected by a large community group overnight, in defiance of the large number of looters and freezing temperatures. Residents came out in their droves to form a plan of action, and successfully defended the shopping centre from going down the same route as other plazas.

Amid the collective effort, heroes of the evening began to emerge. One private citizen who led the defence mission became something of a media darling overnight, as he mobilized the community and faced down gunshots on Tuesday.

Looters did, however, try their luck at the heavily-guarded Maponya Mall. But did it get them anywhere? Like hell it did. Those who were daft enough to try and rob goods from these stores soon found themselves in a world of regret
